Is there any tax relief on health insurance premiums ?
If you hold a medical insurance policy which is paid for by your employer, you may be eligible to claim Medical Insurance Relief.
You can only claim for Medical Insurance Relief if your insurance premium is paid as a benefit in kind (BIK) by your employer.
Qualifying medical insurance policies can be for:
- health insurance
- dental insurance
- health and dental insurance combined.
You do not need to claim the tax relief from Revenue where your premium is not paid for by your employer. In this case, the relief will already have been given as a discount on the cost of the policy. This is known as Tax Relief at Source (TRS).
The relief available depends on whether or not the policy is for an adult or a child.
For an adult over 21, relief available is equal to the lesser of 20% of the cost of the policy or 20% of €1,000
For an child under 21, relief available is equal to the lesser of 20% of the cost of the policy or 20% of €500
Can go back 4 years to claim said relief to 2021 if claimed before 31st December 2025
