Buying goods from abroad

Buying goods from abroad

Buying Xmas presents from outside EU ?

If you buy goods from outside the European Union (EU), you may have to pay:

  1. Customs Duty
  2. Excise Duty
  3. Anti-dumping and Countervailing Duty
  4. Value-Added Tax (VAT).

If your goods have a customs value (including cost, transport, insurance and handling charges) of less than €22, you do not have to pay Customs Duty or VAT.

If your goods have a customs value of more than €22, you will have to pay VAT of up to 23%.

If your goods cost more than €150, you will have to pay Customs Duty and VAT. These limits are for the whole delivery, not just one item.

There is VAT on alcohol or tobacco products, perfumes or toilet waters, regardless of their value.

Buying Xmas presents from countries in the EU ?

Buying goods from another EU country means you pay VAT in that EU country but no customs duties. For alcohol and tobacco products, excise duty is always payable at your local revenue office.

How to pay ?

If your goods are being imported via An Post or a courier, they will calculate the amount of charges you owe. You will need to pay this amount to An Post or the courier before they will release your goods to you.
