Transfer assets to your spouse – Tax relief

Transfer assets to your spouse – Tax relief

If I transfer an asset to my spouse or civil partner do I have to pay CGT ?

No, when the asset is transferred it is treated as if no gain occurred on the transfer.

Your spouse or civil partner inherits your cost and period of ownership.

If your spouse or civil partner sells the asset the original cost and period of ownership is used to calculate any gain arising.

Different rules apply if your spouse is not resident in the country.
