Do I have to pay income tax when I retire ?

Do I have to pay income tax when I retire ?

It depends on your income or joint income if married.

If you are 65 years or more, you can earn up to 18,000 if you are single or widowed and 36,000 jointly if you are married without having to pay income tax or DIRT on your deposit interest earned

If you are married or in a civil partnership, it is the age of the older spouse or civil partner that is relevant, e.g. if you are 64 and your spouse or civil partner is 65, you are entitled to married persons’ or civil partners’ exemption limits.

If your income is up to twice the amount of the relevant exemption limit, you may be entitled to marginal relief, however, it will only be given where it is more beneficial to you than your tax credits.

Please note even though you may not have to income tax you may be liable to USC.
