Tax Relief on medical appliances

You can claim relief on the cost of purchasing, maintaining and repairing medical appliances. To qualify for relief, you must use the appliance on the advice of a registered practitioner.

Appliances that qualify for relief include:

1. glucometer machines
2. hearing aids
3. orthopaedic beds or chairs
4. wheelchairs or wheelchair lifts
5. exercise bicycles
6. computers, if necessary to solve communication difficulties for a person with a severe disability
7. false eyes
8. wigs.

In all cases, the appliance must be medically necessary and used on the advice of a practitioner.

You cannot claim relief for appliances that you purchase without recommendation from a doctor, consultant, dentist or surgeon.
